Jingmen UHV substation to commission production by
Changjiang Times  2008-10-21

Hubei Province Electric Power Company said yesterday, Jingmen ultra high-voltage (UHV) substation project is expected to be completed and go into production by the end of December, which will serve as a reliable power support for Hubei Province.

Statistics show that if the UHV pilot demonstration project settles in Hubei Province and operates at full capacity, it can add another 3 million KW of thermal power to the province, thus saving more than 7 million tons of power coal per year (the current annual coal consumption in Hubei Province is over 40 million tons). For Hubei Province, which outsources 97% of its power coal, the project is equivalent to building another Gezhouba Power Station.

It is understood that the project originates from Changzhi City in Shanxi Province, goes through Nanyang City in Henan Province, and arrives at Jingmen City in Hubei Province, with a total length of 653.8KM, including 183KM in the territory of Hubei Province. Through more than two years of construction, equipment installation and commissioning of the substation at 500KV or below have been completed. It’s expected to go into production at the year-end.

Around 2020, the project will extend to power coal bases in Shaanxi, Shanxi, and West Inner Mongolia in the north, and to Wuhan in the southeast, thus realizing optimized allocation of energy resources on a larger scale.

Hubei Province lacks coal, oil and gas resources. In addition, the development of large and medium-sized hydropower stations within the province will be basically exhausted by 2010. Therefore, the province will have a big gap in electric power in the mid and long term. For this, Hubei Province must seize the opportunity to actively build UHV power grids to go out of the electric power predicament.
